The Launchpad for Tomorrow’s Entrepreneurs
Every year, the New York Business Plan Competition (NYBPC) emerges as an opportunity for the brightest entrepreneurial minds across New York State. This event, designed to empower and connect ambitious students with investors and mentors, has proven time and again to be a hub for innovation and the birthplace of groundbreaking startups.
At the heart of NYBPC lies its mission: to support and elevate emerging entrepreneurs by offering them a platform to pitch their innovative ideas and compete for $100,000 in cash prizes. With more than 50 colleges and universities participating, the competition provides exposure to deal flow and opportunities, opening doors to strategic relationships and growth. This year, 69% of the student teams had a founder who self-identified as underrepresented.
Incredible Stories of Success
Timmy Oh, the 2016 NYBPC Grand Prize winner, founded Vara Safety, a groundbreaking firearm safety company that integrates technology for secure storage. His winning pitch at the NYBPC not only showcased his innovative vision but also inspired Christine Tate, who would become his investor and co-founder. Recalling the event, Tate said:
“Watching his pitch was incredible. I was very moved. I went up to him afterward and said, ‘Let’s start this company.’ We shook hands and started it that day.”
Oh’s victory at NYBPC was crucial as it provided the essential ecosystem of support needed for student entrepreneurs. Without the NYBPC, Tate believes Vara Safety would not have come into existence, underscoring the competition’s significant role in nurturing new business ventures.
