Driving Innovation & Entrepreneurship: Seth Mulligan on Upstate Capital’s Impact

Seth Mulligan, COO of the Griffiss Institute, recently discussed his extensive experience with the Upstate Capital Association of New York, where he supports early-stage business initiatives, notably through the New York Business Plan Competition. As part of Upstate Capital’s Foundation arm, this competition offers a platform for college students across New York to pitch ideas, connect with advisors and engage in hands-on entrepreneurship, all while working to address real-world challenges.

Mulligan highlighted how Upstate Capital’s Foundation branch operates differently from its Association side, which primarily connects investors across Upstate New York. The Foundation is more event-driven, working to ensure young entrepreneurs have spaces to learn about business and innovation. Mulligan, who has volunteered on the board for over a decade, continues to support the organization’s efforts, from judging regional competitions to fostering partnerships.

What makes these events unique, Mulligan explained, is their collaborative spirit. Upstate Capital’s events bring together like-minded individuals—students, investors, entrepreneurs—who are eager to exchange ideas and support new ventures. These gatherings celebrate the energy and optimism of college entrepreneurs while creating room for authentic conversations on pressing challenges, from sustainability to tech innovation. By promoting a space for “good old American dialogue,” Mulligan shared, the events facilitate valuable networking opportunities where attendees can learn from each other’s perspectives, expertise, and approaches to problem-solving.

For Mulligan, the most rewarding part of these events is their palpable energy. He described a “buzz” that comes from seeing participants dive into meaningful discussions with shared passion and intent, driven by the chance to create solutions that matter.
